Not to be confused with a dumper, which a much smaller machine, a dump truck, known also as an articulated hauler or dumper truck or tipper truck in other countries, is used for taking big loads (such as sand, gravel, or demolition waste) for construction as well as coal. A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited (dumped) on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery. An articulated hauler is an all-wheel drive, off-road dump truck. Steering is accomplished via hydraulic cylinders that pivot the entire tractor in relation to the trailer, rather than rack and pinion steering on the front axle as in a conventional dump truck. By this way of steering, the trailers wheels follow the same path as the front wheels. There are other forms of dump truck that are fixed, but the articulated dump truck is the most versatile.
